Animal rescue is tough, anything to make it easier is a Godsend.
Naah this is more sanitary. Unless you scoop everything your cat shits, the cat will dig into its previous waste while trying to cover the current one. It gets on their paws and nails and their bums. They smell horrible and add filth everywhere
I got an automated box the moment I got a cat. But of course it took a few days to arrive. During this time I used a regular litter box, which was so easy to clean. The automated box ended being so much more troublesome. More to clean, more anxiety for the cat. My cat had many accidents while I used the automated box. Luckily I didn’t spend too much on it. Used it for two weeks and then tried to make a cat motel out of it. My cat wouldn’t go near it. After a month or so, I tossed it and went back to a normal cat litter box. It was taking up too much real estate in my studio apartment. Because I placed the litter box next to the toilet, I literally toss the poop into the toilet so I don’t let poop and pee sit around as much as possible so I have a happy cat too.
“why fix something that aint broke” is one of the stupidest things around. something doesnt need to be broken to be fixed/improved. if people in the past hadnt looked at perfectly functioning things and thought “how can i improve this further?” a lot of the tech we rely on wouldnt exist. why should litterboxes get a special pass? if i can get an automatic litter box that reliably keeps the litter clean, keeps the room from smelling and does the bag for me, why should i refuse that and stick to manual? i dont have the time for that and i love my cats.
the only valid drawbacks are the size and not being able to detect potential health issues, but that can be worked around by getting one that is big enough and checking the poo every now and then by turning it off so you can check
